Heart failure (HF) affects millions of people and is associated with substantial high morbidity and mortality, as well as high rates of hospitalization. Therefore, it is essential for practitioners to be able to diagnose and manage these individuals. Subsets of HF including HFpEF (preserved ejection fraction) and HFrEF (reduced ejection fraction) are commonly encountered in clinical practice. This session will focus on the recognition, treatment and prevention of HF, along with discussion of current guidelines that will assist practitioners to effectively manage these patients.

Learning Objectives:
After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Relate the pathophysiology to associated symptoms.
  • Discuss diagnostic criteria for diastolic versus systolic heart failure.
  • Discuss the pharmacological management of heart failure.

NPACE designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.50 contact hours, of which 0.75 is pharmacology credit. Participants should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
