Program Overview:
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death in women in the United States and the developed world. New research has identified novel risk factors such as preeclampsia for CVD in women, and pregnancy and hormone therapy uniquely impact women with regards to stroke and heart disease management. While public health initiatives have increased awareness in this area, there is still confusion among health care providers about risk assessment and treatment of women with heart disease.

Lectures will include a review of updated practice guidelines for screening and prevention of CVD, gender-specific vascular disease, CVD during pregnancy and menopause and the latest on the treatment of valvular heart disease in women.

Learning Objectives:
• Discuss basic science and cutting-edge therapy related to CVD in women and in pregnancy
• Review appropriate use of medications in risk reduction in the areas of hyperlipidemia, diabetes and obesity
• Assess screening for cardiovascular disease in women by stress testing, advanced imaging, and up to date review of blood pressure monitoring
• Identify specific vascular disease such as fibromuscular dysplasia, vasospasm and coronary artery dissection in women from diagnosis to treatment
• Assess pregnancy and menopause-related heart disease in women
• Review symptoms, treatment and outcomes of valvular disease in women
