Massage and Manual Therapy for Orthopedic Conditions Module 4: The Lower Extremities is organized by HomeCEU. This Course has been approved for a maximum of 10 Contact Hours.

Description:
This book introduces massage techniques for orthopedic conditions, promoting the alignment of soft tissue relating to pain and dysfunction. An essential manual for clinical massage therapy, it contains brief descriptions of rationale behind orthopedic massage, mechanisms of injury to and repair of soft tissue, and anatomy of each body area.

The Second Edition also includes detailed assessment for each body region, discusses common lesions, and provides illustrated instructions on how to administer this scientifically based style of massage. Based on traditional orthopedic assessment protocols, coverage includes range of motion, passive and isometric testing, and tests that determine the severity of a condition or injury.

Course Goals:
This course is intended to instruct the professional through a self-paced study on massage techniques for orthopedic conditions.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
• Recognize the two joints of the knee.
• Identify the largest sesamoid bone in the body.
• Define genu valgum.
• Identify and differentiate between medial and lateral menisci.
• Identify and differentiate between static and dynamic stabilizers.
• Recognize the insertion point of the MCL.
• Recognize the origin of the ACL and PCL.
• Identify 3 areas commonly involved with bursae dysfunction.
• Recognize muscles that tend to be tight and short in muscle imbalances of the knee.
• Identify the insertion point of the vastus intermedius.
• Identify 8 muscles that flex the knee.
• Recognize a positive anterior drawer test as a sign of an ACL lesion.
• Recognize pain at the ligament on varus stress test at 30 degrees of knee flexion is a sign of LCL sprain.
• Define posterior sag test.
• Recognize client position during the anterior drawer test and length assessment of the gastrocnemius.
• Recognize 2 things increased lateral tibial torsion is associated with.
• Recognize the tibia and fibula form 3 joints.
• List 3 muscles of the anterior compartment of the leg.
• Recognize the muscle action for peroneus brevis muscle.

• Recognize muscles that tend to be inhibited and weak in muscle imbalances of the leg, ankle, and foot
• Identify the 3 muscles in the first layer of the intrinsic muscles of the foot.
• Recognize 4 muscles in the third layer of the intrinsic muscles of the foot.
• List 5 muscles that perform supination and inversion of the foot.
• List 4 muscles that perform pronation and eversion of the foot.
• Recognize 11 factors predisposing to pain in the leg, ankle, and foot.
• Recognize gastrocnemius strain is the most common muscle injury to the leg.
• Recognize therapist action for assessment of the longitudinal arch.
• Recognize client position for contract-relax muscle energy technique for the tibialis anterior.
• Recognize client position for contract-relax-antagnoist-contract muscle energy technique for the soleus and muscle energy technique to increase ankle dorsiflexion.
