OVERVIEW
Genomic Medicine and Primary Care is organized by Pri-Med and would be held during Aug 12, 2015 - Aug 12, 2018. This CME Conference has been approved with a maximum of 0.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
Under the impetus of the Human Genome Project, a rapidly growing number of genes and mutations are becoming targets for molecular testing in patients and whole populations affected with, or at risk for, genetic disorders. In this activity, Dr. Grody will review the modern molecular biology techniques responsible for translating gene discoveries into clinical tests.
This activity will provide a contemporary overview of the current state of this field, with a discussion on which applications can be handled adequately in primary care and which would benefit by referral to a medical genetics center. The advent of genome-level DNA sequencing, with all that it can reveal about the patient’s present and future risk factors adds an increased complexity to the situation and Dr. Grody will address some of the ethical dilemmas raised by this powerful technology.
• Summarize the latest genomic discoveries and technological innovations that are driving the implementation of companion diagnostics and genomic medicine
• Discuss the clinical utility of new molecular markers in various genetic diseases, cancers, and pharmacogenetic applications
• Examine the unique ethical, legal, psychosocial, regulatory and economic implications surrounding these developments, and their impact on patient access to "personalized medicine" offered by this powerful diagnostic and predictive technology
