Patient and Family Education is a key facet of rehabilitation nursing. Families are an integral part of who our patients are and they are an integral part of the rehabilitation team; including them in the education process is a high priority. This course will guide you through the concepts and practical application of patient and family education and coordination.

• Contrast teaching methods for the stages of development
• Discuss teaching strategies for patients with disability/chronic illness
• Apply the teaching–learning process to rehabilitation
• Assess patients’ readiness to learn patient learning
• Recognize barriers to learning
• Discuss common family theories
• Identify developmental tasks for families
• Describe the components of a comprehensive family assessment
• Discuss how rehab nurses can assist in moving a family toward cohesion and unity
• Identify strategies for maintaining and/or restoring family coping ability, facilitating hope and forgiveness.
• Impact health policy for persons with disability and/or chronic illness
• Identify names and purposes of standard regulatory and accrediting agencies, such as CARF, JC, CMS, and Magnet
• Demonstrate an awareness of the power of health policy in the provision of care to clients and families living with disability and/or chronic illness
