Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, registrants will be able to:
• Describe the motion of the subtalar and transverse tarsal joints in general and during a gait cycle, and how they contribute to the five functions of the feet.
• Describe the five most common foot types and be able to examine the foot, analyze the findings and categorize the foot type correctly.
• Describe the cause and effect of tibial rotation on foot mechanics and vice-versa, and as such predict where symptoms are most likely to occur.
• Describe the mechanism by which foot orthotics exert their effect in maladies of the lower limb and back.
• Perform a subtalar neutral position cast in a foam impression box.
• Describe the general orthotic types and analyze examination findings in order to choose the best orthotic for the patient’s presenting complaint.
• Describe the additions and modifications that can be included in a foot orthotic device, and recognize the conditions in which each would be of benefit to the patients presenting complaint.
• Describe the conditions that orthotics are usually successful in treating and the mechanism by which orthotics address the pathology present.
