OVERVIEW

Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a histologic lesion to glomerular podocytes resulting in glomerular sclerosis. Focal describes scarring of some but not all glomeruli while segmental pertains to sclerosis of some but not all glomerulus. The patchy presentation is significant as a kidney biopsy may or may not contain glomeruli involved in the disease process. This activity reviews the pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnostic approach and treatment plan for patients afflicted with this condition.

Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
1. Cite the epidemiology of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
2. Recall the pathogenesis and genetics of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
3. Recognize the diagnostic processes required to correctly identify focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.
4. Identify a successful treatment plan to cure or control focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

Estimated time to complete this activity is 1 hour.
