Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis

Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a serious kidney condition characterized by scarring (sclerosis) in scattered (focal) segments of the glomeruli—the tiny filtering units in the kidney. The condition specifically impacts podocytes, vital cells involved in the kidney’s filtration process. ‘Focal’ implies that not all glomeruli are affected, and ‘segmental’ means only parts of individual glomeruli are involved. This patchy presentation can make diagnosis particularly challenging, as a kidney biopsy may not always capture the affected glomeruli. FSGS can be either primary (idiopathic) or secondary to other conditions such as obesity, viral infections, or drug toxicity. It is a leading cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults and is more common among African American populations. Early identification and a thorough understanding of its pathogenesis and genetics are essential for improving outcomes.
