Overview:
This course provides nurses with a review of the pathophysiology, symptoms, and management of hypovolemic shock due to blood loss.

Goals and Learning Outcomes:
Hypovolemic shock can be life-threatening in trauma situations. Blood loss remains the leading cause of preventable death in the first 24 hours of admission after a traumatic injury (McQuillan & Makic, 2020). This course focuses on the management of hypovolemic shock related to acute blood loss. Pathophysiology, symptoms, and management are reviewed with a focus on appropriate fluid resuscitation.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiology behind hypovolemic shock and associated symptoms and complications.
  • Identify strategies for the initial management of a patient in hypovolemic shock due to blood loss.
  • Recall appropriate management strategies and care considerations when administering fluid resuscitation to a patient in hemorrhagic hypovolemic shock.
