Description:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation that is not reversible. An estimated 15 million people in the U.S. 18 and older have been diagnosed with COPD. Another estimated 12 million may have COPD that has not yet been diagnosed. The airflow limitation is usually progressive and associated with an abnormal inflammatory response in the airways and lungs to noxious particles or gases. The evidence-based GOLD guidelines, updated in December 2015, provide strategies for healthcare providers worldwide to prevent, diagnose, and manage COPD. This module provides clinicians with information about the incidence, causes, and symptoms of COPD and latest clinical guidelines.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this program is to provide nurses and respiratory therapists with information about the incidence, causes, and symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

• List three classes of medications for COPD
• Discuss four areas in which education can benefit patients with COPD
