Description:
Hyperkalemia (HK) is the electrolyte disturbance most observed in patients suffering from kidney disease or heart failure and significantly impacts their quality of life and prognosis. It occurs in 3-5% of patients with heart failure and in 8% of patients with heart failure and comorbidities.

In Italy, the incidence of the pathology is around 2-3% , but can reach up to 10% in hospitalized subjects. It should also be noted that the risk is even tripled in people with chronic kidney disease , cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The risk of developing severe hyperkalemia is 4-5%, but can even exceed 30%, in some populations such as patients on chronic dialysis therapy.

For these patients, hyperkalemia leads to an increase in mortality, a deterioration in quality and lifestyle, an increase in hospitalizations and hospitalization times and higher costs on the national health service.

It is therefore essential to look at the two aspects of the disease: the cardiological and the nephrological one and to encourage the sharing of experiences and the exchange of knowledge between these two specialists in order to guarantee the optimization of potassium control in patients.
