Course Description :
Endoscopies are minimally invasive procedures performed to diagnose and treat abnormalities of the internal vessels and organs of the body. They are procedures that can reveal accurate and detailed images of the interior of the body at a nominal risk to the patient. These procedures are extensively used to investigate symptoms of GI dysfunction and treat biopsy-proven diseases of the GI tract occurring in the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, and large intestine. This educational activity will discuss the importance of procedures that have become commonplace in our modern medical environment as technology has advanced to meet recognized needs.

Goal and Learning Outcomes : 
The goal of this module is to understand the reasons for endoscopic procedures of the upper and lower GI tract, the schedule for these endoscopic procedures, the methods for endoscopic procedures, and nursing's role in the safe and efficient performance of these procedures. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• List the reasons for endoscopic procedures of the upper and lower GI tract.
• Discuss the intraprocedural role of the nurse during an endoscopic procedure.
• List possible complications during and after an endoscopic procedure.
