Course Description:
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a minimally invasive procedure performed to treat disorders of the gallbladder, pancreas, and liver, and the ducts that drain these organs. An ERCP enables the physician to evaluate the internal organs that comprise the biliary system. An ERCP can detect disorders of the biliary system, such as cholelithiasis (gallstones), inflammatory strictures, leaks attributable to trauma or surgery, blockages, undiagnosed upper-abdominal pain, cholangitis (biliary duct inflammation or sclerosis), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), and cancer of the biliary system or the pancreas. This course explains the procedure, the conditions it treats, complications, and concerns about endoscopes.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this continuing education module is to familiarize nurses with the risks, benefits, and therapeutic ramifications of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as it relates to abnormalities of the biliary system.
