Description:
Ectopic pregnancy, in which the fertilized ovum implants outside of the endometrial lining of the uterus, remains a gynecological concern. While ectopic pregnancies account for about 1% and 2% of pregnancies in the U.S., they represent 3% to as high as 9% of pregnancy-related deaths. The exact incidence of ectopic pregnancy is difficult to determine because many patients are treated in outpatient settings. Nurses practicing in private obstetric or public health clinics, EDs, and surgical suites often encounter patients with ectopic pregnancies. Comprehensive knowledge of the course and treatment of this condition can augment nurses’ participation in primary and secondary interventions. Accurate, expeditious interventions can be potentially lifesaving.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this continuing education program is to update nurses’ knowledge of the identification and care of women with ectopic pregnancies.
After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:

  • Identify six predisposing factors associated with ectopic pregnancy
  • Identify five signs or symptoms related to ectopic pregnancy
  • List three interventions for women who have an ectopic pregnancy
