Program Description:
Influenza is a highly contagious acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses A, B, or C. Vaccinations offer the opportunity of protection against influenza, but the rate of vaccination in the United States is suboptimal. Antiviral medications have proven to be effective for the prevention of influenza and can reduce the severity and duration of the flu when used as treatment. Managed care professionals, including pharmacists, should be aware of the treatments available for the prevention and management of influenza as well as the gravity of related complications, especially in high-risk patient populations. Additionally, pharmacists should understand the significance of initiating treatment early with antiviral therapy to prevent or reduce the incidence of flu-related complications.

Educational Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
• Identify the economic burden of influenza
• Illustrate the complications and disease burden that can be prevented with early intervention
• Examine the clinical evidence associated with approved agents for the treatment of influenza
• Analyze economic data to appropriately manage influenza
