Description:
The acute aspiration of gastric contents in the perioperative setting is a recognized complication of anesthesia that may lead to severe patient morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this course is to provide learners the opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge to competently perform and interpret a gastric ultrasound examination, and therefore, enhance patient care by decreasing the overall risk(s) associated with the aspiration of gastric contents in the perioperative setting.

Learning Objectives

• Explain the indications and limitations of a gastric ultrasound examination.
• Identify all relevant anatomical structures that need to be identified for a gastric ultrasound examination.
• Describe the proper scanning technique for gastric ultrasound.
• Recognize the different types of gastric content.
• Estimate the volume of clear fluid based on a cross-sectional area of the gastric antrum.
• Successfully interpret the findings of a gastric ultrasound examination.
• Acquire focused gastric ultrasound images.
• Identify and interpret focused gastric ultrasound images containing normal anatomy and abnormal pathology relevant to the practice of a physician anesthesiologist.
