Course Description:
The prevalence of diagnostic errors often goes unrecognized, despite the fact that these errors often are preventable and more likely to harm patients than other types of errors. This program covers trends in diagnosis-related malpractice allegations and examines the risk factors that contribute to diagnostic errors. A variety of risk strategies designed to reduce diagnostic errors are presented along with best practices related to patient assessment, documentation, and follow-up.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:
• Discuss claims data and trends related to diagnostic errors
• Identify and analyze contributing factors/root causes of diagnostic errors that affect patient safety
• Identify processes and systems that reduce and prevent diagnostic errors
• Identify at least one risk-reduction strategy that they can implement in their practices
