Learning Objectives:
After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to:
• Identify the need for frequent and effective wound cleansing for continued wound bed preparation
• Review the role of the hypochlorous acid as the antimicrobial preservative in wound cleansers compared to other preservative agents, in terms of safety to tissue when exposed to these important ingredients found in cleansing solutions
• Examine the importance of purity of hypochlorous acid preservative in a cleanser solution and the role of the low pH
• Differentiate between the biological/tissue level effects of hypochlorous acid, versus hypochlorite species and other species such as PHMB (polyhexanide)
• Examine the role of wound cleansers for negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) with instillation, an idealized treatment algorithm for inpatient care of the infected wound and clinical case results combining • NPWT with hypochlorous acid preservative solution instillation
