Activity Overview:
Point-of-care testing (POCT) for detection of acute or chronic diseases in the outpatient or emergency department settings has made it possible to promptly establish the etiology of disease and facilitate diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, and referral decisions for a variety of these conditions. Utilization of POCT has steadily increased over the past 40 years since its initial introduction in healthcare settings. Because it provides immediate results in non-laboratory settings, it supports a patient-centered approach to healthcare delivery. Therefore, it is crucial to empower clinicians at the “point of care,” including emergency room physicians, primary care/family practice physicians, and pharmacists, because they have the potential to significantly affect management strategies.
