Description:
This course is intended to increase the knowledge and awareness of pharmacists about the diagnosis, management, and counseling of patients with asthma. After completing this course, it is anticipated that pharmacists will be able to select appropriate first-line and add-on treatment for the management of chronic and acute asthma based on current evidence-based practice guidelines. Additionally, pharmacists will be able to provide effective education and counseling on pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management.
Course Objectives:
• Describe the incidence, etiology, risk factors, and symptoms of asthma along with classification methods to aid in its diagnosis and treatment.
• Discuss the long-term goals of asthma management and the stepwise approach to medication therapy based on asthma severity levels.
• Describe the role of short-acting and long-acting medications in the treatment of asthma.
• Explain how to use the most recent Global Initiative for Asthma Guidelines to create a patient-specific care plan.
• Identify key counseling and patient education points for pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management of asthma.
