• Forms of Tobacco
• Nicotine Pharmacology & Principles of Addiction
• Drug Interactions with Smoking
• Assisting Patients with Quitting
• Aids for Cessation

Learning Objectives:
As a result of participating in this lecture learners should have a working knowledge of the following topics, essential to competency in addiction medicine and identify areas where more study may be needed:

• Cite the widespread impact of tobacco use on public health and addiction
• Understand the pharmacology of nicotine (receptors, messengers, clinical effect)
• Be able to describe the neurobiology of nicotine dependence.
• Understand the medical risks of various tobacco products, including emerging tobacco products.
• Provide brief skills for clinicians using behavioral techniques for smoking cessation, including the 5 A's and increase knowledge of pharmacologic cessation aids and their use in addiction settings.
