Summary:
Approximately 12% of adolescents are prescribed psychotropic medications with antidepressants, stimulants, and antipsychotics among those most frequently prescribed. Thoughtful use of psychotropic medications in this age group is warranted, given increased rates of adverse effects. Recently updated treatment guidelines (eg, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorders) offer important strategies to optimize the use of psychotropic medications in children and adolescents, including the role of some novel medications/formulations. This presentation will review pertinent guideline updates and clinical pearls regarding novel psychotropic medications.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Review pertinent updates to pediatric treatment guidelines to inform most up to date use of psychotropic medications
• Evaluate the role of novel psychotropic medications in the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity and anxiety disorders, among others
• Compare novel stimulant and non-stimulant preparations, including mechanism of action, duration/onset of effect, and role in treatment
• Design a monitoring plan for a pediatric patient prescribed a novel psychotropic medication
