Description:
This course includes descriptions of four aspects of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional abuse. Emphasis in this course will be on:
• detection of abused children
• assessment of injuries and signs and symptoms
• causes
• long term effects
• preventive measures
• parent education
• laws, mechanisms and the duty of nurses to report child abuse.
Currently, Iowa, Kentucky, New York, and Pennsylvania mandate continuing nursing education topics of child abuse and/or Abusive Head Trauma (Shaken Baby Syndrome), and the nurse’s duty to report as license renewal requirements. This course cites these states and others to provide examples of definitions and reporting requirements.
Learner Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Show knowledge of the incidence, mortality and morbidity associated with child abuse.
• Consider the leading precipitating factors in child abuse when assessing a child.
• Report a child with signs and symptoms of abuse.
• Manage prescribed treatment options for an abused child.
• Initiate education of parents about preventing child abuse.
• Post a free Child Abuse Prevention poster for the education of colleagues, staff and patient family.
