Course Description:
Cardiopulmonary 107, Patient Education, is a 1-hour course designed for the beginning to intermediate clinician interested in understanding the principles and practice of effective patient education. Various learning theories needs assessments, and a description of patient education methods and materials will all be reviewed and highlighted as it relates to the patient with cardiopulmonary needs. Understanding the importance of patient education is paramount for effective treatment planning and will influence patient perception of their diagnosis, enhance decision-making, improve quality of life, and reduce overall healthcare costs and disability.

Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
• Describe the benefits of patient education and the impact it has on healthcare costs
• Contrast and compare a variety of teaching methods used in patient education
• Describe the various aspects of planning for patient education
• Describe concepts of adult learning theories and models
• Examine ways to evaluate the effectiveness of patient education
