This presentation will focus on commonly encountered GI complaints in the primary care world relating to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Attendees will learn the initial approach to GERD including conservative management and medical therapy, along with a discussion of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), the newer Potassium Competitive Acid Blockers (PCABs), and novel procedural interventions for reflux. They will also learn when long term acid suppression is indicated and how to counsel patients on potential side effects of PPI therapy. We will also discuss diagnosing IBS using a positive diagnostic strategy with the Rome IV criteria and what initial laboratory and diagnostic workup is indicated. Finally, we’ll discuss the spectrum of treatment options available in the treatment of IBS.

• Identify the typical symptoms of acid reflux, and what symptoms warrant direct referral to a gastroenterologist for further diagnostic testing
• Discuss best practices regarding use of acid suppressing medications, and when long term acid suppression is indicated

• Discuss a value-based approach to making a positive diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, rather than considering it a diagnosis of exclusion
