The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC's) Commission on Accreditation, ANCC Provider Number 0012 (60 min contact hour). AACN has been approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the California State Board of Nursing, California Provider number CEP01036 for 1.2 contact hours (50 min contact hour).

Activity Summary :
The immune/inflammatory system is composed of the white blood cells (WBC) and tissue cells originally derived from the leukocytes. These cells work together to modify disease. If the balance is disrupted, disease occurs. This presentation reviews the physiologic and pathophysiologic processes within the immune system, including the inflammatory mechanism and systemic inflammatory response syndrome and correlates the laboratory tests commonly ordered and interpreted to identify these mechanisms. The latest research findings regarding immunomodulation are identified. Case studies are used to integrate the theoretical content to clinical implementation.

Objectives :
• Describe the mediators (cytokines) responsible for the immune inflammatory response.
• Identify triggers to the immune inflammatory response.
• Explain strategies to improve the outcomes in patients with a heightened immune inflammatory response.
