This module describes four common biting insects that use human blood as a source of food. It will also include information on the brown recluse spider, a spider that is often blamed for skin lesions across the country, even in areas where no brown recluse spiders are known to exist.

Goal and Learning Outcomes :
The goal of this program is to educate nurses about common biting bugs. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Discuss bed bugs, scabies and head lice: their detection, identification, bite symptoms and transmission
• Explain how and why brown recluse spider bites are often misdiagnosed
• Describe biting midges and the symptoms of their bites
