Biosimilars are new agents that are highly similar to reference biologic agents, but with slight differences. Four biosimilars have been approved in the United States, and more approvals are expected due to expiring patents on originator biologic agents. Despite the abbreviated nature of the process, extensive scientific rigor is applied to support biosimilar approval. Understanding biosimilar development, manufacturing, and approval should increase clinician comfort regarding biosimilars for treatment in many therapeutic areas, including rheumatology, gastroenterology, and oncology. Ideally, the availability of biosimilar and interchangeable products will offer more treatment options, greater access to care, and lower treatment costs. As more biosimilars are brought to the market, pharmacists have an important responsibility to educate patients and providers about this class of agents.
