OVERVIEW

Biceps Femoris Course is organized by Brookbush Institute.

Course Description:
This course describes the anatomy and integrated function of the biceps femoris muscle (a.k.a. the hamstrings, lateral hamstring, leg biceps). This muscle is located on the posterior thigh, composed primarily of type I muscle fibers, and crosses the hip joint and knee joint. The biceps femoris is a hip extensor, hip external rotator, knee flexor, and tibial external rotator. This course also describes the influence of the biceps femoris on sacroiliac joint and hip joint arthrokinematics, fascial integration (sacrotuberous ligament), postural dysfunction, and subsystem integration. Sports medicine professionals (personal trainers, fitness instructors, physical therapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, etc.) must be aware of the biceps femoris muscle for the analysis of human movement, and the development of sophisticated exercise programs and therapeutic (rehabilitation) interventions. Further, this course is essential knowledge for future courses discussing injury prevention and physical rehabilitation (e.g hip pain, hamstring injury, hamstring muscle strain, hip joint impingement, low back pain, knee valgus, knee varus, knee pain, etc.) and biceps femoris exercises and techniques for enhancing sports performance (e.g. lower body (leg) stability, strength, power, and hypertrophy training).

Behavioral Objectives
• Students will be prepared to pass a final exam by choosing from a list of potential answers to behavior-objective matched multiple-choice questions.
• By the end of the seminar, the participant will be able to recall at least 5 anatomical features related to the biceps femoris
• Describe the behavior of this muscle at it relates to postural dysfunction
• Explain the integrated relationship between the biceps femoris and 5 other structures
• List at least 3 techniques that may be used to address dysfunction of the biceps femori
