OVERVIEW

Below the Acromial Arch: A Deep Dive Into Subacromial Pain Syndrome is organized by Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS).

Release date: 4/23/2024
Expiration date: 4/23/2027

Description:
The shoulder complex is designed in a way to allow for large ranges of motion that function to ultimately orient our hand in space. The shoulder has to rely on many structures, both static and dynamic, to provide adequate stability and mobility. Given the high demands placed on the shoulder through work, sport, and everyday activities, shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal complaint after back and neck pain. Selective strengthening and mobility exercises can restore appropriate biomechanics, improve range of motion, decrease pain, and improve performance. This program will inform clinicians on the biomechanics of the shoulder girdle complex and differential diagnosis strategies as well as provide updated treatment approaches for patients with shoulder pain and movement dysfunctions.

Learning Objectives:
HSS Continuing Education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder.
  • Perform a thorough clinical examination with effective differential diagnosis of the shoulder.
  • Identify appropriate exercises and manual techniques to treat a patient with subacromial pain syndrome.
  • Apply evidence-based exercise principles to case examples.
