Course Description :
Almost 4,100 cases of bacterial meningitis and 500 deaths from bacterial meningitis occurred annually in the U.S. between 2003 and 2007, the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Members of the healthcare team must be able to recognize symptoms that could indicate meningitis to expedite testing and treatment. Clinicians also can advocate for preventive vaccination among appropriate age groups. Bacterial meningitis remains a dangerous foe. With knowledge of preventive measures (basic good hygiene, including droplet precautions and vaccination) and awareness of early symptoms, the impact of meningitis on children and young people can be greatly reduced. This course covers the incidence and causes of bacterial meningitis, its common symptoms and complications, prevention and treatment.
