OVERVIEW

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the field of neurology, and epilepsy care stands at the forefront of this digital transformation. This CME/CE course explores the current and potential applications of AI in the diagnosis, management, and long-term monitoring of epilepsy.

Participants will begin by distinguishing the core types of AI—machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL)—and their operational relevance to epilepsy care. The course provides a practical understanding of how AI algorithms are trained using large datasets to identify seizure patterns, predict seizure onset, and classify EEG abnormalities with speed and precision surpassing human capability in many instances.

Learners will examine existing applications, including AI-powered seizure detection tools, automated EEG interpretation, wearable devices, and mobile applications for seizure tracking and real-time monitoring. Use cases include seizure forecasting models, AI-assisted medication management, and personalized treatment algorithms based on multimodal data inputs such as EEG, MRI, and clinical history.

The course also addresses major limitations of current AI models: data bias, generalizability, interpretability, and the risk of over-reliance on black-box algorithms. Emphasis is placed on clinical oversight, validation of AI tools, and ethical considerations in the deployment of machine-based diagnostic systems.

Through case-based discussions, participants will gain confidence in interpreting AI-generated insights and integrating them thoughtfully into patient care workflows, ensuring that technology enhances rather than replaces human clinical judgment.

By the end of the course, healthcare professionals will be equipped to evaluate AI tools in epilepsy critically, apply them where appropriate, and recognize the boundaries of their clinical utility.

Educational Objectives

  • Differentiate various types of Artificial Intelligence (e.g., machine learning, deep learning) and their specific roles in epilepsy care.
  • Identify current and emerging AI applications for seizure detection, diagnosis, and management.
  • Understand limitations, biases, and ethical concerns related to AI deployment in clinical neurology.

Who Should Do This Course?

This course is intended for:

  • Neurologists and Epileptologists seeking to integrate AI technologies into clinical practice.
  • Neurophysiologists and EEG Technicians interested in AI-assisted diagnostic tools.
  • Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Providers involved in acute seizure care and triage.
  • Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants supporting long-term epilepsy management.
  • Psychiatry and Pediatrics Neurology professionals managing neurodevelopmental epilepsy.
  • Clinical Informatics specialists building or evaluating AI solutions for neurological care.

It is particularly valuable for professionals evaluating or piloting AI-enabled solutions in epilepsy monitoring, treatment personalization, or workflow automation.

Did You Know?

  • AI-based EEG interpretation systems have shown up to 90% accuracy in identifying epileptiform activity. (Lancet Digital Health, 2022)
  • Wearable seizure detection devices using AI can alert caregivers within seconds of a convulsive episode. (Neurology, 2021)
  • Deep learning models have predicted seizure onset up to 30 minutes in advance in clinical trials. (Nature Biomedical Engineering, 2020)
  • Bias in AI training data can lead to decreased accuracy in underrepresented populations. (JAMA, 2022)
  • The FDA has approved several AI-based medical devices for seizure detection, including wearable monitors and smart EEG analysis tools. (FDA, 2023)
