OVERVIEW

Antiseizure medications (ASMs), while primarily indicated for the treatment of epilepsy, are increasingly recognized for their therapeutic potential in a broad range of neurological and psychiatric conditions. This CME/CE course offers a focused exploration of ASMs used beyond epilepsy, providing healthcare professionals with the evidence-based knowledge needed to apply these treatments effectively in diverse clinical scenarios.

Participants will review the literature surrounding off-label use of ASMs in conditions such as migraine, bipolar disorder, neuropathic pain, anxiety, and fibromyalgia. Through an examination of randomized controlled trials, observational data, and clinical practice guidelines, learners will gain clarity on which ASMs are supported by substantial evidence versus those used based on clinical experience or mechanistic rationale.

The course also examines the pharmacodynamics and mechanisms of action of major ASMs—including sodium channel blockers, GABA modulators, calcium channel inhibitors, and glutamate antagonists. Understanding these mechanisms allows clinicians to match ASM properties with the pathophysiology of non-epileptic conditions.

Participants will learn how to optimize ASM selection and dosing when used off-label, including monitoring for side effects, drug interactions, and special population considerations. Case-based discussions highlight real-world applications of ASMs for managing comorbid epilepsy and mood disorders, chronic pain, and other complex presentations.
