The COVID-19 global pandemic highlighted the legal responsibilities and dilemmas of healthcare professionals. This annual update discusses legal cases specifically related to issues from the pandemic, and the lasting effect they may have on standards of care in pharmacy practice.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
• Review recent legal cases involving ivermectin refusal by a healthcare institution and consider their effect on standards of care
• Discuss the role of courts in determining the rights of hospitalized patients to demand access to drug therapies that are not made available under hospital policies and procedures.
• Describe the possible consequences for the healthcare system if patients were allowed to demand the use of medications that are not the standard of care for the patient's condition.
• Explain the difference between "freedom to" and "freedom from" within the context of a patient's request for a specific medication
