Description:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most commonly treated infections by healthcare professionals. In the United States, they account for over 10 million ambulatory visits a year and are among the most common healthcare-associated infections.

Objectives:
The goal of this module is to discuss a brief review on the diagnosis of UTIs and a detailed review of available oral antimicrobials and treatment strategies for multi-drug resistant (MDR) UTIs. After taking this course, you should be able to:
• Distinguish between urinary tract infections and asymptomatic bacteriuria to avoid the unnecessary use of antibiotics.
• Identify and compare oral antibiotics that are active against extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing • Enterobacteriaceae (EPE), AmpC β-lactamase producing bacteria, and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE).
• Determine a patient-specific antibiotic regimen that limits adverse effects.
