Alzheimer disease affects millions of Americans with the number of people affected continuing to rise. The burden of this illness greatly impacts patients, caregivers, and the healthcare system. Research is underway to investigate disease-modifying agents that could potentially prevent, treat, or cure this difficult disease. Managed care pharmacists will have a better understanding of the pathophysiology of this disease and be aware of the treatment modalities that are on the horizon.

• Examine the underlying pathophysiology and disease course.
