This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "31st Annual National Clinical Conference" held in Bloomington, Minn., Oct. 17-19, 2022.
Rare diseases — often complex, chronic life-threatening conditions affecting roughly 33 million people in the U.S. — impact quality of life, carry a high financial burden, and have few, if any, treatment choices. Adults and children with undiagnosed genetic diseases often face an unpredictable, long journey, referred to as a diagnostic odyssey, that lasts eight years on average and includes unnecessary tests and procedures, misdiagnoses, and delayed treatment while their conditions worsen. This presentation addresses the needs for improved access to care, new advances in rare-disease diagnosis, and treatments emerging with the rise of personalized precision medicine. New possibilities for collaboration among medicine, research and drug-development organizations are also discussed.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Provide an overview of the conditions that qualify as rare diseases and their impact on quality of life, health care costs, and outcomes as related to diagnosis and treatment availability.
- Discuss the current and emerging contributions that precision medicine and specific testing approaches can provide in diagnosing and treating rare diseases.
- Describe how rare-disease outcomes can be improved through strategies such as collaborative approaches that coordinate health care, research, and drug-development organizations.

Social Workers
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00 enduring continuing education credit.
