Description:
Non-allergic angioedema (non-AA) is a life-threatening condition with a reported mortality rate of up to 30%. This condition is often confused with allergic angioedema, though the management of the two is markedly different. While allergic angioedema is mediated by histamine and is responsive to epinephrine, non-AA is mediated by bradykinin and is not treatable with SC epinephrine. The types of non-AA including hereditary angioedema, drug-induced angioedema and acquired angioedema are explained to the APRN. In addition, drug selection between novel agents for the management of this condition are described so optimal patient outcomes may be achieved. Pharmacology content = 75%.

Objectives:
• Differentiate the presentation, physical assessment and pathophysiologic parameters between allergic and non-allergic angioedema.
• Compare current therapies for non-allergic angioedema with respect to pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and mechanism of action.
• Discuss acute treatment options for non-allergic angioedema, including cost comparisons, risks of use and adverse reactions.
