Course Description :
Treatment for HIV depends on the extent of disease and presence of any opportunistic infections. The goal is to stabilize the immune system so opportunistic infections (OIs) are less likely to occur. The chief method of preventing the immune system from worsening is the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART, previously referred to as HAART). Since ART was introduced, mortality rates of patients with AIDS have improved significantly. When treatment failures occur, they are often related to a delay in diagnosis or timing of treatment or poor adherence to therapy. In addition, some patients with HIV require prophylaxis against specific opportunistic infections.

Conference Objectives are :
The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists, dietitians, physical therapists, and physicians with accurate information about antiretroviral drugs to treat HIV, including the different classes, criteria for administration, and management. After studying the information presented you will be able to:
• List the different classes of antiretroviral drugs used for the treatment of HIV
• Explain the criteria for initiating ART in patients with HIV
• Discuss the management of HIV-induced lipodystrophy in patients with HIV
• Recognize prophylactic management of opportunistic infections
