2026 Project ECHO – Palliative Care – Masculinity and Medicine: Reframing Supportive Care for Men is organized by VCU Health Continuing Education.

Description:
This activity examines the impact of traditional masculinity norms on men’s engagement with serious illness and palliative care. Participants will explore gender-based stereotypes and biases that may impede psychosocial support, identify common grief and coping challenges experienced by men with life-limiting illness, and learn evidence-informed communication and education strategies tailored to this population to enhance supportive care delivery.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:

  • Describe gendered stereotypes and biases related to traditional masculinity that may create barriers in serious illness care.
  • Identify psychosocial issues related to grief and coping commonly faced by men with life-limiting illness.
  • Employ communication and education strategies adapted for men with serious illness.
