OVERVIEW

2024 Addressing Opioid Use Disorder in the Primary Care Setting is organized by Albany Medical College (AMC).

Release Date: May 01, 2024
Expiration Date: April 30, 2027

Overview:
A recent CDC review of electronic health records revealed only one in five of patients with documented Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) are receiving treatment. To improve this alarming statistic and address the opioid overdose epidemic, a new federal law authored by Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY, 20th District) took effect in 2023 that removed the requirement for a separate X-Waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for OUD treatment, and also removed limits on the number of patients a prescriber may treat with this life-saving medicine. In light of these alarming statistics, CDPHP is launching a 2024 campaign, “Courage to Care: Path to a Substance-Free Future,” to promote treatment of OUD and other substance use disorders (SUD), including Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD), by primary care and family medicine practitioners. This is a four-part webinar series beginning April 30, 2024, hosted by CDPHP medical directors and others.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:
• Understand how to identify opioid use disorder (OUD)
• Understand what elements should be evaluated in patients who have OUD
• Consider whether buprenorphine induction or maintenance can be provided
• Understand what community resources may be useful for referrals, resources for provision of patient care, and resources for office systems and procedures
