12th Annual Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Educational Seminar

12th Annual Virtual Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Educational Seminar: A Global Approach to Sickle Cell Disease is organized by Cayenne Wellness Center, Axis Advocacy and will be held from Sep 17 - 19, 2020. This course has been approved for a maximum of 10 CME/CEU Credits.

Course Description:
The three-day seminar, whose 2020 theme is “Sickle Cell Disease Near and Far: A Global Approach,” will address multifaceted aspects of sickle cell disease and provide sickle cell trait awareness and education. Attendees will learn about the latest scientific and clinical information relating to sickle cell through lectures, panel discussions, and presentations from experts focusing on pathophysiology, disease complications, management and treatment.

The purpose of this educational activity is to strengthen the participant’s knowledge base about sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait through lecture, discussion and sharing of current and future treatment regimens. In addition to presentations on the pathophysiology, complications, management, and treatment of sickle cell disease, the seminar will present the latest scientific and clinical information related to the disease.

This year’s theme for our 12th Annual Virtual Sickle Cell Disease Educational Seminar is “Sickle Cell Disease Near and Far: A Global Approach”. On Thursday – September 17th, we will hear from those who will update the community on the Networking California grant, ICER Task Force, and the NHLBI Guidelines for the Management and Treatment of SCD with political advocacy on obtaining evidenced-based management and treatment of Sickle Cell Disease in all CA hospitals (during our Legislative Action Workshop). This will be followed by a session on Sickle Cell Trait education, our Celebration of Life ceremony, and panel talk on the latest curatives for Sickle Cell Disease. We will end Thursday with a session for the young adults ages 21 – 40 years of age.

On Friday – September 18th, we will hear from our first Keynote Speaker – the lovely Professor Dame Elizabeth Nneka Anionwu from the U.K. Following the Keynote Speaker, we will have a panel session with patients from around the world (Bahrain, France, Brasil, Kenya, Australia, Canada and of course the U.S.A.) on how they Live Well With Their Sickle Cell. We are honored that TedTalk speaker and pediatric hematologist Dr. Ahmar Urooj Zaidi will present on Sickle Cell Disease and the Battle for Equality, Justice, and Respect. Following Dr. Zaidi, we will have ASH updates on their Sickle Cell Centers, Patient Engagement and Clinical Trials by Shauna Whisenton, and their Global Coalition. Friday ends with two network receptions, one sponsored by Vertex/Crispr and the other by Novartis’ Generation S Rock the Block.

On Saturday – September 19th, we begin with our second Keynote Speaker – Eboni Lance, MD, followed by a psychosocial session on mental health and sickle cell disease. In the afternoon, we have a session on treatment therapies and Sickle Cell Disease featuring the two new FDA approved drug treatments specifically designed for folks with sickle cell disease – Global Blood Therapeutics Oxbryta and Novartis’ Adakveo. Other pipeline therapies currently being worked on will also be presented (Imara, Cyclerion, etc.). The seminar will end with a benefit concert featuring special performers to fund Cayenne Wellness Center’s Sickle Cell Disease Client Assistance Program.
