Course Objectives:
• Identify the demographics and the use of services by people with spinal cord injury
• Discuss the following physical/psychological changes, associated comorbidities and management required by ? patients status post SCI:
1. shoulder function
2. osteoporosis and fractures
3. skin and pressure sores
4. pain, pain self-efficacy and catastrophizing
• Explain the use of assistive technology and brain-computer interfaces as mechanisms for improving performance of critical activities of daily living for the patient status post SCI
• Identify and describe the following areas of spinal cord research:
1. Promoting axon growth
2. Enhancing compensatory growth of uninjured neurons
3. Preventing scar formation
4. Replacing lost cells: stem cells and artificial scaffolds
5. Redesigning rehabilitation
6. Exploring the genetic frontier
7. Hypothermia treatment
• Discuss ADA information, accommodation ideas, and resources for management of employees with SCI.
