Recognize and prevent pediatric abusive head trauma (AHT), including shaken baby syndrome. Child abuse prevention CEU course covers definitions and terminology, risk factors, presentation, assessment, diagnosis, intervention and prevention strategies, and reporting.
Course Learning Objectives
1) Define pediatric “abusive head trauma” (AHT).
2) Recognize the risk factors for head injuries resulting from abuse.
3) Describe the mechanisms of injury, clinical presentation, history gathering, physical assessment, and diagnosis of pediatric AHT.
4) Distinguish between accidental and abusive head trauma in the pediatric population, including controversies surrounding diagnosis.
5) Identify immediate and long-term treatments and interventions for children presenting with pediatric AHT.
6) Summarize primary, secondary, and tertiary resources for prevention of pediatric AHT.
7) Discuss reporting requirements for suspected child abuse and neglect.
