The primary audiences for this TIP are:
• Drug and alcohol treatment service providers.
• Mental health service providers, such as psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, and
psychiatric/mental health nurses.
• Peer recovery support specialists.
• Behavioral health program managers, directors, and administrators.
• Clinical supervisors.
• Healthcare providers, such as primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, general/family medicine
practitioners, registered nurses, internal medicine specialists, and others who may need to enhance
motivation to address substance misuse in their patients.
Description:
Motivation for change is a key component in addressing substance misuse. This CE course shows how SUD treatment counselors can influence positive behavior change by developing a therapeutic relationship that respects and builds on the client’s autonomy. Different motivational interventions counselors can apply to all stages in the Stages of Change (SOC) model related to substance misuse and recovery from addiction are also described.
CE Course Objectives:
Describe three core counseling skills of motivational interviewing.
• Determine the core characteristic of motivational interviewing that differentiates it from other counseling methods.
• Explain a key strategy in helping clients move from the Precontemplation stage to contemplating change.
• Identify what counselor behavior is key to enhancing clients’ motivation to change.
• Provide three strategies for emphasizing client responsibility.
• Summarize the key to using feedback to enhance motivation
