Course Description:
Welcome to the Pharmacy-Based Medication Administration Services continuing education training program. This online interactive program will provide an overview of the delivery of these services in community pharmacies and techniques for administering injections.

Module 1 reviews the rationale for why pharmacists may wish to provide medication administration services (MAS). We will also look at which medications are appropriate for MAS and the laws and regulations that impact pharmacists who provide MAS. Then we will look at the logistics of providing MAS.
Module 2 provides an overview of the use of the intramuscular route for injections.
Module 3 describes how to administer intramuscular injections at deltoid and ventrogluteal sites.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Describe opportunities for pharmacists to provide medication administration services (MAS).
• Explain how to apply the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process to the delivery of MAS.
• Identify strategies for providing MAS in a community pharmacy.
• Explain why the intramuscular (IM) route of delivery is most appropriate for certain medications and describe strategies to minimize risk.
• Describe how and when to use the Z-track method for IM injections.
• List the four sites for intramuscular injections.
• Identify key anatomical surface landmarks and describe underlying tissues for deltoid and ventrogluteal injections.
• Explain appropriate administration techniques for deltoid and ventrogluteal injections.
