Course Overview:
Much has been written about approaching interactions with the "difficult patient," and recommending various methods to provide the best care possible under the circumstances. Unfortunately, not only can dealing with a difficult patient leave a physician feeling frustrated and exhausted, but also, it can come with the added burden of responding to the patient's complaint to the Board of Registration in Medicine, The Joint Commission, the Department of Public Health and/or through the healthcare system’s grievance process. This online course will use text, case studies and an exam to discuss effective communication, expectations and boundaries, as well as documentation methods when managing difficult patient encounters.
Course Objectives:
- Assess what behaviors are effective in communicating with difficult patients.
- Identify how expectations and boundaries can help to manage difficult patients.
- Explain the importance of documentation in dealing with difficult patients.
- Determine when certain behaviors are sufficient to terminate the physician-patient relationship.
