Course Description:
This continuing professional education (CPE) self-study short course includes required reading of a review article which describes the carbohydrate-insulin model as a proposed model for the development of obesity. The premise of the model is that hormonal responses from a high glycemic load diet result in increasing fat deposition in the body, driving a positive energy balance. The article outlines the proposed model, compares it to the model of obesity that is currently accepted, and discusses controversies around the model. The authors present this potential cause of the obesity pandemic as a new paradigm, one that requires further study and scientific debate as part of the quest to address obesity.
