Description:
This manual offers guidelines for working with suicidal adults living with substance use disorders. It covers risk factors and warning signs for suicide, core competencies, and clinical vignettes.

Based on the content of this course, I can:
• List warning signs for suicide
• Summarize the 4-step process for addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors in substance abuse treatment using the acronym GATE
• Explain competencies that should be incorporated to work effectively with suicidal clients
• Role play representative vignettes of counseling sessions with clients who have suicidal thoughts and behaviors
• Describe specific counseling techniques for working with suicidal clients
• Give examples of legal and ethical issues to consider when managing and providing treatment to clients with suicidal thoughts and behavior
