OVERVIEW

Otolaryngology Seminar is organized by American Seminar Institute (ASI).

Course Expires for Credit: 07/06/25

Description:
Series 71 (OTO71):Determination of AHI in patients with OSA; Natural History of Vestibular Schwannomas; Patients with High Risk Opioid Misuse; and more!
Highlights include managing symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux; types of HPT based on labs and tests; Medications for Patients with MD, and more.

Course Topics:
Highlights From the 27th Annual Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment of Sleep Apnea and Snoring
• Recognize the different factors that affect determination of AHI in patients with suspected OSA; Identify biomarkers that may predict comorbid conditions in patients with OSA; Implement guidelines from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine when evaluating adults with OSA who may require referral for surgical consultation; Compare different surgical techniques for treatment of OSA and Optimize the selection of hypopharyngeal surgery technique based on OSA severity and body mass index.

Sinus Surgery/Health Care-associated Infections/Eustachian Tube Dysfunction
• Administer preoperative steroids in sinus surgery; Optimize greater palatine injection in sinus surgery; Explain the importance of air changes per hour in the hospital setting; List risk factors of health care-associated infections associated with temperature and humidity; Choose appropriate treatment of patulous eustachian tube dysfunction.

Vestibular Schwannoma/Pharyngeal Carcinoma
• Recognize trends in the prevalence and natural history of vestibular schwannoma; Compare the outcomes of treatment vs observation for patients with vestibular schwannomas; Choose between definitive surgery and definitive chemoradiotherapy for a given patient with human papillomavirus (HPV)- positive oropharyngeal carcinoma; Consider surgical de-escalation protocols for select patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal carcinoma; Assess the role of HPV in the development of hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Vertigo/Meniere Disease and Migraine
• Assess for signs and symptoms of BPPV; Distinguish among the features of BPPV variants; Select appropriate treatment strategies, for managing recurrent BPPV; Differentiate between the symptoms of Meniere disease and vestibular migraine; Decide whether conservative or surgical treatment is appropriate for a patient with vestibular migraine.

Ethics of Opioids/Tracheomalacia/Vocal Cord Leukoplakia
• Identify patients at high risk for opioid misuse; Implement strategies for pain management after otolaryngologic surgery to minimize the risk for misuse of opioids; Evaluate and manage severe tracheomalacia in pediatric patients; Summarize the natural history of vocal cord leukoplakia and likelihood of progression to malignancy; Develop strategies for management of vocal cord leukoplakia to optimize oncologic and functional outcomes.

Reflux/Postnasal Drip/Allergic Rhinitis
• Recommend appropriate alternatives to proton pump inhibitors for managing symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux; Use appropriate testing modalities for detection of laryngopharyngeal reflux; Differentiate various fundoplication procedures for laryngopharyngeal reflux; Assess for various head and neck disease states in patients with postnasal drip; Choose effective therapeutic agents for the management of allergic rhinitis.

Head and Neck Updates
• Select appropriate imaging modalities to evaluate a thyroid mass; Manage contrast-associated acute kidney injury and contrast allergy; Weigh the value of molecular testing of thyroid nodules; Evaluate the need for parathyroidectomy; Differentiate types of HPT based on laboratory values, imaging, and molecular testing.

Rhinology/Otology
• Identify factors that increase risk for failure of functional endoscopic sinus surgery; Develop strategies for identifying the cause of failed functional endoscopic sinus surgery; Evaluate patients with otosclerosis prior to performing stapedectomy; Optimize procedures for performing stapedectomy in patients with otosclerosis; Use clinical practice guidelines to manage cases of high-risk and persistent epistaxis.

Current Concepts in Otology
• Choose appropriate medications for patients with MD; Advise patients on dietary strategies that may relieve symptoms of MD; Match patients with hearing loss with suitable hearing assistance devices; se imaging to identify patients with SSNHL; Select appropriate treatments for patients with SSNHL.

Current Trends in Otolaryngology
• Identify patients with an esophageal coin for whom esophageal bougienage is most likely to be successful; Compare and contrast the effectiveness, safety, and cost of different methods for removal of esophageal coins; Develop management strategies for patients with nasal polyps that recur after endoscopic sinus surgery; Select patients with nasal polyps who are most likely to respond to biologic therapy; Summarize recent findings on the endotypes of odontogenic sinusitis and use of tranexamic acid for postoperative epistaxis.
