Learning Objectives For WV HIVAMP

  • Describe how HIV causes clinical illness
  • List the risks of acquiring HIV
  • Explain how to diagnose HIV
  • Identify who should be screened for HIV infection
  • Describe the opt-out approach to screening
  • Identify the symptoms of acute HIV
  • Describe the association of the CD4+ cell count with the risk for specific illnesses
  • Identify when initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) is recommended for patients with HIV
  • List the preferred ART regimens for treatment-naive patients and the characteristics of each
  • Describe how HIV treatment is monitored
  • Explain why it is recommended to monitor for drug toxicity and check for drug-drug interactions when using ART with other medications
  • Identify key drug-drug interactions with the US Public Health Service guidelines preferred initial HIV treatments
